Our Leadership

Chairman: Mr Robert Marshall

Robert Marshall is a prominent figure in harness racing administration, known for his loyalty and dedication to the sport. With a long involvement spanning over three decades, Robert has experience in a broad range of administrative areas.

Significant among these roles is Robert’s position as Chairman of Club Menangle. Over the past four years in the Chair, Robert has overseen the opening of the Menangle Country Club which will play a significant role in sustaining harness racing in the rapidly developing Macarthur region of South-Western Sydney.

Robert has served as the Chairman of the Inter Dominion Harness Racing Council, a governing body that initially united the six Australian states plus the north and south islands of New Zealand to conduct an annual festival of harness racing.  That Council was the basis of the formation of Harness Racing Australia.

Additionally, Robert has been a Board Member of Harness Racing New South Wales (HRNSW), serving on both its Regulatory and Commercial committees.

Robert has been a member of the Board of Australian Pacing Gold for over a decade and Chairman for the past four years. During that time, APG has undergone a number of changes, but still has at its core the principles of a not-for-profit entity, established to provide high-quality sale and futurity-racing opportunities for breeders and participants.

Deputy Chairman: Mr Peter Watkinson

With a distinguished background in executive management across various government levels, Peter Watkinson is an accomplished professional specializing in planning, land management, and stakeholder engagement. Following his impactful tenure in the Victorian public service, Peter transitioned to provide expert consulting in planning and Crown land management.

From 2016 to 2023, Peter served on the board of Harness Racing Victoria, contributing his strategic acumen to drive growth and operational excellence. His passion for the Australian harness racing industry is profound, evident through his roles not only with APG and HRV but also as both an owner and breeder.

Peter Watkinson’s blend of hands-on experience and strategic leadership continue to shape the industry’s and APG’s thriving future.

Director: Mr William Ellis OAM

With a career in harness racing spanning over five decades both on and off the track, William Ellis has established himself as a prominent breeder, owner, A-Grade licensed trainer-driver, and industry leader. His journey, marked by triumphs (and a few disappointments) on major tracks across Australia and New Zealand, has solidified his legacy within the industry.

Ellis’s influence extends beyond the racetrack, as he’s taken on pivotal roles in shaping the present and future course of harness racing. He has served as the president of the NSW Harness Racing Media Guild from 1990 to 2008 and was a member of the, since disbanded, NSW Harness Racing Advisory Council in 1996. Additionally, his role as an Assessor for the NSW Racing Appeals Tribunal (harness) since 2012 underscores his unwavering dedication to upholding fairness and integrity within the Australian harness racing.

Through his continued service and contribution to the industry Ellis has been awarded various accolades, including the Medal of the Order of Australia (general division). As one of the two representatives of the NSW Harness Racing Club Ltd on the Australian Pacing Gold (APG) board of directors since 2017, he continues to contribute his strategic insights, guiding harness racing towards a promising future.
