One of Western Australia’s leading standardbred nurseries, Copper Lodge, is gearing up for what could be a lucrative Australian Pacing Gold Yearling Sale at Magic Millions, Middle Swan on Sunday.

The Serpentine farm will offer a quality draft of 10 yearlings at the world class sales complex and farm principal Mike Howie can’t wait to see the culmination of his team’s hard work come to fruition in the sales ring.

“I’ve got six fillies and four colts. They’re a really good even bunch,” Howie, a third generation harness participant, said.

“I really like both my Bettor’s Wish’s. They’re neat, compact horses who look like they will just run early. The colt out of Our Copper Art would be our best one.”

Listed as Lot 510, he’s a half-brother to the Group 2 winner Caveman 1:50.8 ($224,953) and the Westbred Classic placegetter Purest Copper.

The other Bettor’s Wish is Lot 533, a lovely filly from the talented Somebeachsomewhere mare Some Copper Beach ($100,020), whose nine successes included the WA Gold Bracelet and De Campo Memorial.

“I’ve had amazing feedback on both these horses,” Mike said.

Lot 487, a lovely, big American Ideal colt and the first foal out of a seven-time winning Art Major mare Major Jade (1:57.1), should attract plenty of attention. He’s bred on the identical cross to Soho Tribeca and the Australian 2YO Colt of the Year Centenario.

Buyers looking for a double Westbred eligible filly should not go past Lot 436, a big, roomy, long barrelled filly by leading WA sire Fly Like An Eagle out of Dontgetmeruffled (1:56.1). She’s a half-sister to the Sales Classic runner-up Walsh ($178,433) and the multiple Group placegetter Nevermindthechaos ($164,767).

Lot 481, a Downbytheseaside filly out of the Group 3 Victorian winner Maastricht (1:55.3), is a half-sister to the Melton winners Captain Maastricht and Maas Betting Again and the recent three-year-old winner Shazza Love and a member of the immediate family of Australian Mare of the Year Nolarama and the Vicbred champion Captain Bellasario.

The Gloucester Park winner Secret Dragon will be represented by a filly by the emerging colonial bred stallion Poster Boy as Lot 525. Secret Dragon won nine races and has a 100 percent record at stud, leaving four winners from four to race.

Lot 542, the only filly by the brilliant, young sire Stay Hungry in the WA sale, is out of the smart racemare Tinted Pearl, a winner of 21 races. A tall, athletic filly, she’s a half-sister to the metropolitan winners Tinge Of Fear (1:54.3) and Perilous.

Copper Lodge is also offering a Captain Crunch half-brother to the multiple Group 1 placegetter Delightfulreaction ($210,551) as Lot 415; a Captain Crunch half-sister to the $100,000 winning mare Misstiano as Lot 503; and a lovely Soho Tribeca colt from Orphan Reactor (Lot 508).

From a banking background, Mike Howie has been breeding standardbreds for over four decades. He and his wife Sharron have bred the winners of more than 720 races including 270 at Gloucester Park.

“Handsandwheels is the best one we’ve ever bred. He won the WA Derby and $700,000 and his half-brother Rock Me Over won almost $400,000.”

“We’ve bred two of the last three Sales Classic winners, last year with Waverider and two years before that with the WA 2YO Colt of the Year Floewriter.”
