Lot 26 - Race Filly by Goodtime Sammy out of Embraced

An increasing workload has led Brett Lunghusen to offer up six of his horses at our Online Winter Mix Sale, which runs from Friday August 15, until Sunday August 17.

The 64-year-old Echuca dairy farmer, who manages three dairy properties owned by corporates in Sweden, is selling four broodmares, as well as a 3-year-old Jilliby Kung Fu colt, and a 3-year-old Goodtime Sammy filly.

“I oversee three large international farms in nearby Tongala, Grigarre, and Timmering, and have my own 26-acre property at Echuca where Jack and Peter Caldow used to live. Life is very hectic at the moment, so I’ve cut right back to just a couple of horses now. There simply aren’t enough hours on the clock.

“I’m also very old school when it comes to harness racing and I don’t feel the industry has been the same since they left Moonee Valley. They used to get some nice crowds there, as people would wander in from the city on a Friday or Saturday night looking for something to do.” Lunghusen said.

“In saying that I think the new owners of my horses will have some fun with them. They are quite well bred, I just hope they go to a nice home and are cared for the way we cared for them,” he added.

His half dozen up for sale are:

  • Lot 26 – Race Filly, Unnamed (Embraced x Goodtime Sammy)
  • Lot 37 – Race Colt, Unnamed (Goodtime Ruby x Jilliby Kung Fu)
  • Lot 45 – Broodmare, Rockstar Suzi Que (Sweet Maddy Lombo x Yankee Rockstar)
  • Lot 91 – Broodmare, Whitbys Miss Mia (Whitbys Miss Penny x Major In Art)
  • Lot 110 – Broodmare, Embraced (Tuapeka Reign NZ x Art Major USA)
  • Lot 130 – Broodmare, Sweet Maddy Lombo (Magic Maddy Lombo x Panorama USA)

Lunghusen, a third-generation harness racing exponent, said his father Ray had some nice horses over the years with Russell Thompson, including the 13-win Keystone Scotch gelding, Keystone Fella.

“It all started with my grandfather, Lindsay Pollock, who had some nice trotters like Anna Mae, Comic Queen and Emma Blue,” Lunghusen said.

He said the first horse he bought was a 1977 Lys Hanover – Daytan (Intangible) chestnut filly named Tan Lyss. She placed eight times from 16 starts in 1981 and 1982.

However, Lunghusen never bred his first standardbred until 2015, when he put the unraced Armbro Aussie brown mare, Karamea Toastime to Somebeachsomewhere, and in October of that year Beach Time was born. That bay mare won seven races and placed 20 times, recording a 1:56.6 mile-rate in the process.

Lunghusen said he was proud to have progeny from grand old Western Australia with the Dr Ed Dewar-bred Whitbys Miss Penny (32 races and $568,289) up for sale this week.

Whitbys Miss Penny won the Group One 1992 Freemantle Cup, the 1991 Group One Western Australia Derby, and the 1991 Western Australia Oaks. She was also a multiple Group Two winner.

Lot 91 - Miss Whitby Mia

“I’ve always been a stickler for breeding and this mare is absolute quality. The last of her seven foals – Whitbys Miss Mia – will sell as Lot 91. She’s has left two un-raced foals, and although she currently dry, at the age of 12 she has plenty of time to produce some quality foals,” Lunghusen said.

He said the 2002 Panorama 11-win ($106,588) black mare, Sweet Maddy Lombo was one mare he was particularly fond of, and she was up for Sale as Lot 130.

“She is currently dry but has left four winners and has a 6-year-old Yankee Rockstar un-raced brown mare named Rockstar Suzi Que also in the Winter Sale. She is Lot 45 and would make a lovely dam. She has yet to leave a foal,” Lunghusen said.

“I’ve kept a Major In Art black colt out of Sweet Maddy Lombo,” he added.

Lot 110, six-win win named bay mare Embraced is also sure to catch the buyer’s eye.

This daughter of 2009 Art Major – Tuapeka Reign (Vance Hanover), who is currently empty, has left three foals, and so far only one has made it to the races. Her winner was the 2017 A Rocknroll Dance gelding, Shazzam, who was triumphant in 11 of his 33 starts and also placed in eight others.

Embraced’s other two foals are a 6-year-old A Rocknroll Dance mare, and a 3-year-old Goodtime Sammy filly – who is also up for Sale this week as Lot 26.

The other 3-year-old is a Jilliby Kung Fu – Goodtime Ruby un-named colt, who will sell as Lot 37.

He is the fourth of five foals out of the un-raced Goodtime Ruby, however her mother, the 1995 Presidential Ball mare, Browning Blue Chip (1:50.0), won 15 races and $786,030 in North America.

Goodtime Ruby’s only foal to the races, the 2018 Guranteed black mare, Catchingconfidence, won six races and placed on 11 occasions.

Lunghusen has also retained a 2-year-old Major In Art colt out of Goodtime Ruby.
