The past few weeks have seen the first lot of finals from our Adelaide Sales Classic Series and some great racing at Globe Derby Park. We kicked off with the fillies a few weeks ago and they were followed up with a mixed sex final on Saturday night.
The Ride High Filly South Aussie Star, trained and driven by Ryan Hryhorec, led throughout its race to win the $20,000 2YO Fillies Sales Classic on June 6.
Bred by South-East couple Peter and the late Lesley Medhurst, South Aussie Star was knocked down for $13,500 to a group organised by the SA BOTRA at last year’s Adelaide auction.
She is the sixth foal and sixth winner out of the Beach Towel mare Towelling, a member of the maternal family which produced the SA Oaks and triple Southern Cross winner Thorninmyside, King Grin (SA Golden Nursery and Southern Cross), Forty Seven Flash (SA Breeders Plate and Southern Cross), Purple Royale and the Gawler Derby victor Pete’s Elect.
Ideal Miki, who passed through the ring without attracting a bid at last year’s South Australian Sale, made a one-act affair of the $20,000 2YO Mixed Sex Sales Classic Final on Saturday night.
Having only her second start, the brown Always B Miki filly was sent straight to the front from the outset and was never seriously in danger of defeat thereafter. She eventually prevailed by 10.6 metres without driver Danielle Hill even turning the whip.
She rated 2:02.3 for the 1800 metres from behind the mobile with the last 800 in 59.6 seconds.
“I couldn’t get a bid for her at the sale, so I brought her home and paid up for the sales race,” breeder-owner Neville Ismaili, a long-time supporter of APG, said.
The filly is trained by respected Marong horseman Trevor Patching.
Ideal Miki is the third foal of the unraced American Ideal mare Ideal Taxes, a close relative of the dual Inter Dominion champion and Horse of the Year Beautide.
“I bought Ideal Taxes out of the APG Sydney sale in 2012 for $10,000,” Neville recalled. “Her first foal by Rock N Roll Heaven never raced and her second foal an Art Major filly was passed in at the 2024 Melbourne APG sale.
“She’s has had some issues with her knees, but she’ll be racing within four to five weeks.
“Ideal Taxes has since produced a Pebble Beach filly foal and she’ll be nominated for next year’s APG sales.”
Death And Taxes, the dam of Ideal Taxes, has left three winners from five live foals.
“A Bettor’s Delight colt out of her made $142,500 at the APG Sydney Sale in 2017, while another Bettor’s Delight colt sold for $75,000 one year later,” Ismaili said.
Ismaili, who conducts Ashdon Valley Racing at Undera, in the heart of Victoria’s lush Goulburn Valley, currently owns about a dozen broodmares.
The best horse he bred was the former outstanding NSW stayer Our Uncle Sam, who won 24 races and finished runner-up in the A. G. Hunter twice and the 2018 Inter Dominion Grand Final for $717,039 in stakes.
