DESPITE a change in date, the Australian Pacing Gold Sovereign remains Mahomes’ primary target this campaign.

Originally scheduled to be conducted at Club Menangle next month, the feature was pushed back to September 20 for the heats, with the Final four nights later.

Referring to the postponement as “an inconvenience”, trainer Peter Russo stated the altered timeline resulted in a change of preparation but did nothing to his overall plans.

“I had worked out his races to have him ready for the APG next month, but with it being a month later now I’ve had to change things around a little,” Russo said.

“He won first-up after a nice break and I may only give him another start or two and he can stay fresh before I wind him up again at the end of August.

“Either way, he’ll remain on target for the APG before he again has a short break to be ready for the Breeders’ Challenge later in the year.”

Russo’s “start or two” includes Mahomes racing at Club Menangle today with the son of Tintin In America a short-priced favourite to extend his unbeaten status for the year.

Drawn the outside of the front row over 1609 metres, Mahomes is aiming for his fifth consecutive victory.

“I couldn’t be happier with the way he has come up this season,” Russo said. “He won his first two last year and ran some handy races after that, but he has come back more like a racehorse as a three-year-old.

“He’s drawn wide today, but I’ve got no doubt he can overcome that.”
