Goulburn professional breeder Matt Day ranks the brilliant Breeders Crown champion Loucasso as one of the best horses he’s bred in more than three decades in the sport.
Bought for $40,000 at our Sydney sale in 2024, the Sweet Lou colt notched his seventh success from just nine starts when he led from the outset and spreadeagled a top field in the $100,000 Group 2 classic at Melton on Saturday night.
The $50,000 winner’s cheque boosted his stake tally to $400,204 and he is clearly the richest of his age, gait and sex in Australia this season.
Loucasso has won three of the biggest features on the two-year-old calendar in the Group 1 $500,000 The Protostar, the $150,000 Australian Pacing Gold Melbourne Sales Graduate Series and now the Breeders Crown.
Day, a member of one of NSW’s foremost harness racing families, bought Loucasso’s dam Our Little Artist (by Art Major) privately as an empty mare back in 2020.
She had left three winners from four previous foals, but nothing in the class of Loucasso, who is the overwhelming favourite for two-year-old of the year honours.
A yearling colt by King Of Swing out of Our Little Artist was knocked down to Bathurst horsewoman Amanda Turnbull for $34,000 at this year’s APG Sydney auction.
Out Little Artist has been served by Sweet Lou this year.
The Art Major mare belongs to a top ranking family, being out of the SA Oaks and Southern Cross winner Saved A Corka, the dam of 10 individual winners including the SA Derby winner Major Exclusive and the Southern Cross winners Aspiring Artist and Rap Artist.
Day has an outstanding record in the Australian Pacing Gold sales-race series, having bred four $150,000 Final winners in Captain’s Queen (2021 NSW), Captain Ritchie (2022 NSW), Bettors Creation (2025 NSW) and Loucasso.
Anntonia, the first three-year-old filly to go inside 1:50 in Australasia and a three-time Group 1 winner, the NSW Breeders Challenge winner Miss Halfpenny, the ‘Cups King’ Sicario Jorge Street (Tasmania Cup) and Humble (1:50) have been other top performers brought out by Day.
The popular Goulburn breeder has nominated three yearlings for the APG Sydney sale at Warwick Farm on Sunday, March 15.
The consignment includes a Bettor’s Delight filly out of the prolific Menangle winner Bainfeild Washington (Lot 263) and a pair of Captain Crunch colts, one from the Group 3 WA Mares’ Mile victor Im Elsa (Lot 201) and the other a close relative of King Of Swing, Bettor Twist, Mach Dan, etc. (Lot 229).
