APG Race Series – Australasia’s Richest Sales Series
In 2019, APG undertook a comprehensive review of our race series, to ensure that Australasia’s richest Race Series continues to maximise its appeal amongst our valued participants.
The process began with APG surveying our owners, vendors and trainers to determine the key features that our participants wanted to see in a revamped race series.
Having analysed the responses, APG subsequently developed two models, each of which incorporated the key themes that emerged from the original survey.
The first model was a “National” based model where horses competed in heats in their home state before progressing to a National final (rotating between Melbourne, Sydney & Brisbane), whilst the second model was a “State based” model, where APG’s key sales states (NSW, QLD, VIC & WA) each hosted their own individual race series restricted to horse that were purchased or trained in the relevant state.
Both models were presented to participants, who were asked to vote on their preferred model.
In an overwhelming result, 75% of participants voted in favour of a switch to a state based model which delivers:
- More prizemoney;
- More Group One Races (including Group One Races in every APG State); and
- A broader spread of prizemoney amongst participants.
Additionally, APG’s State based model removes the significant risks and costs associated with travelling young horses interstate, and makes it easier for trainers to manage their stables.
Based on the flood of support for the switch to a State based model, APG made the change to a state based model commencing with its Series 31 race series for graduates of the 2020 APG sales.
Heading into the 2021 sales season, we are proud to confirm that our 2021 APG & APTS Sales Graduates will compete for over $2.25million in exclusive APG prizemoney, spread across 13 Group One Races & 10 Group Two Races.
Importantly, this outstanding prizemoney, which represents Australasia’s richest standardbred sales series, is only available thanks to APG’s industry-owned and not-for-profit status.
