All eyes will be on the APG Gold Coast Yearling Sale on Sunday where the first youngsters by US boom sire Tall Dark Stranger go through the sales ring for the first time in Australia.

The handsome son of legendary sire Bettor’s Delight has two impressive colts among the 80-plus yearlings on offer in the Gold Coast sale. Tall Dark Stranger was a superstar on the track, winning $2 million in stakes as a two and three-year-old.

He won the two-year-old Breeders Crown final. As a three-year-old, he won the Meadowlands Pace and North America Cup. He was voted US 2YO and 3YO colt of the year. But his biggest accolade was being crowned overall US horse of the year as a three-year-old.

His first crop of US foals were a sensation in the sales ring last season. Sixty Tall Dark Stranger youngsters sold for more than $5.5 million at Lexington. Twenty six of those yearlings went for more than $100,000, with top priced colt Phantomofthenight making $350,000.

Both his colts in the Gold Coast sale are out of outstanding race mares.

The first to go through the ring (Lot 15) is the first foal of Newcastle Oaks winner Chevrons Reward (1.51.1, $152K) and the second (Lot 72) is from seven-time Menangle winner Reaza Grunter (1.50.8, $110K).

The sale on Sunday will also see the first foal of Victorian cult hero Ride High go through the ring. The filly (Lot 31) is from a family that has produced generations of Group 1 winning fillies, including superstar youngsters Katy Perry and WA Oaks winner Our Major Mumma.

Capt Midnight is another stallion to debut progeny at the sale. The impressive son of all conquering sire Captaintreacherous has 60 Australian yearlings in his first crop – three of those, two fillies and a colt will be available to Gold Coast buyers.

There is great depth in the sire list for the sale, with youngsters by proven grand circuit producers Bettors Delight, Sweet Lou, Art Major, Rocknroll Heaven and American Ideal on offer.

There are plenty of youngsters from the next wave of potential super sires, including Always B Miki, Downbytheseaside and The Storm Inside.

Buyers who follow early two-year-old trials will look closely at the three Captain Crunch yearlings. The stallions first crop of two-year-olds have already started to hit the track and are making a strong impression.

Captain Stirling, a son of Captain Crunch that sold through the APG Perth Yearling Sale last year, stunned onlookers when he won a qualifying trial at Pinjarra on Wednesday in 2.00.6sec – running his final 400m in 26.9sec.

For those buyers who favour progeny from quality race mares, there are 12 mares that earnt more than $100,000 on the track with yearlings in the sale.

Most yearlings are eligible for the lucrative QBred bonuses and cashback schemes and the exclusive APG Pot Of Gold series, giving new owners a chance to make quick returns on their investments.
